“We want to recognise entities that are providing a very convenient, a very cost friendly or user friendly service, asses how impactful the service is to the citizens and how it has changed their lives, which entities have we kept their apps on our phones?” Babirukamu noted.

He added, “we want to lead the digital revolution as the government. We want all our Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to digitize their operations. As Uganda we ought to emulate Estonia's Digitalization Journey, people only leave their homes for divorce registration and mortgage the rest is done in the comfort of their homes.”

Dr Hatwib Mugasa, the Executive Director of the National Information Technology Authority (NITA-U) said it is important for Uganda to run while other countries around the world are walking in regard to digitization of government services.

“Disruptive or getting out of your comfort zone may be taken in a negative way but we must embrace it for change and so e-government services are taking us out of our comfort zone.”

The awards are meant to bring together government agencies to share their experience and also appreciate the journey they have moved through in achieving their mandate.

“Our reach may not be that extensive but the MDAs have a better understanding of the environment they are working in but also we need to coordinate that environment to have a one government approach of rolling out services and so this expo will achieve that coordination.” Mugasa said.

According to NITA-U, the E-Government Excellence week features an E-Government Expo Slated for 3rd December 2021(today) at Garden City and will include masterclasses and Webinars as MDAs showcase their e-services to the public and the awards will be on 1Oth December.
