Suspects will have to be issued  a receipt before they are releases on police bond in a move to to  address concern of extortion and corruption in police.

This is part of the new guidelines released by Uganda Police   on how  suspects  can cure police bond.

The  guidelines were developed by the Justice law and order sector[JLOS] working with Uganda police force through directorate of research planning and development.

Under the new guidelines a receipt issued before one is released on bond and a copy is retained at the police station or post and another attached to their file.

According to the Police spokesperson,Fred Enanga, the guidelines will be piloted in 21 districts  country wide.

Some of the districts where this will be piloted include  Kabalole, Kasese, Arua, Kyegegwa, Bundibugyo, APAC, Yumbe, Kitgum, Gulu, Amidat, Tororo, Kaberamaido, Kabong, Napak, Nakapiripirit, Padel Oyam, aand Abim.

Enanga says the new format is aimed at fighting abuse of police bond.

He says that the receipt with words “police bond is free” has a provision where the officer issuing the bond signs, their name and rank, a serial number , provision for telephone contact for Professional Standards Unit for reporting cases of extortion, space for names of sureties in the event the suspect jumps bond or defaults on its terms and at the back there is space for recording the attendance of the suspect in accordance to bond terms.
