The resident state attorney for Masindi, Charles Bwiiso has been arrested for soliciting a bribe of 3 million shillings from a suspect in a defilement case.

Bwiiso asked for the money from the family of the suspect to close the file after both sides agreed to settle the matter out of court.

He was arrested following a bait laid by the State House Anti Corruption Unit.

In a statement issued by the unit, the case was reported at Masindi police stations vide CRB 149/2022 Uganda V Alinaitwe Joseph. But for more than ten days, the suspect had not been produced in court.

The families of the victim and the suspect agreed to settle the matter out of court, and a request was made to the RSA to withdraw the case.

It is alleged that after receiving this request, Bwiison demanded for a bribe of 3 milling Ug X to close the file but the family pleaded with him, and he asked them to raise 1.5 million shillings.

The family then reported the matter to SHACU, which dispatched a team of detectives to Masindi.

The detectives laid a bait of one million which was delivered to the Resident State Attorney's office and was received by Bwiiso.

Immediately after pocketing the money, he wrote a letter to the district CID officer directing him to submit the file for further legal advice since the families had settled the matter.

He was later arrested with the exhibit in his pockets.
