Rotaract International has entered into a partnership with Hariss International to plant 10,000 trees by the end of 2022 to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change.

Under the Rotaract Earth initiative, trees are being planted in different parts of the country targeting schools and depleted forest reserves.

Through this partnership, Hariss International the manufacturers of RIHAM beverages have injected 17 million shillings towards the  tree planting project, which aims to also address food insecurity and primary health care challenges in communities.

Jerome Hall the head of marketing at Hariss International handed over the cheque to Ian Mwiine the chairman Rotaract Earth Initiative.

“We are going to be planting trees in a forest reserve in Koboko. The forest reserve is called Ozubu and it has about 100 hectares that need reclaiming.  The National Forestry Authority provides us with gazetted land and it’s on this gazetted land that we do plant trees" said Mwima.

The planting of trees is a twofold activity.  Trees will also be planted in schools in West Nile.

Mwima noted that some of the money will be used to purchase over 1000 fruit tree seedlings to be planted during the  Rotaract Earth 7th Edition  in the West Nile districts of Arua and Koboko.

Fruit trees will be planted in Onialeku , Muni, and Ediofe girls’ schools.

“We also do planting of fruit trees in most educational institutions. As an initiative we usually target primary schools and secondary schools, because we believe that it is in these schools where most of these students will be able gain the outcome”

Rachel Luwedde, the Public Relations manager, Hariss International described the partnership as “a great opportunity for us to continue pushing our efforts of environmental sustainability across Uganda ''.We feel that if you initiate the idea of environmental protection and recycling in young people at a very early age, they will be able to continue this moving forward. Hariss has a strategic goal to sensitize the youth in Uganda on the importance of environmental conservation” she stated.

Luwedde appealed to other organisations in the manufacturing sector to continue supporting pushing the initiative of protecting the environment in the best way they can.

The two day activities taking place next weekend will also host a health camp that will provide free medical services to more than 400 people in Arua town.
