Uganda Wildlife Authority has suspended hiking activities to Margherita Peak in Rwenzori National Park as a precautionary measure.

According to UWA spokesperson Bashir Hangi this follows a comprehensive assessment by their team showing crevasse formation in the Margherita glacier.

A crevasse is a deep, wedge-shaped opening in a moving mass of ice called a glacier. Crevasses usually form in the top 50 meters (160 feet) of a glacier, where the ice is brittle.

“To make hiking safer, we are exploring the option of installing a permanent ladder at a strategic location on the right side of the Margherita glacier. This alternative route will provide a safer passage for hikers to Margherita” said the statement issued by UWA publicist, Hangi added.

He said the Authority is now prioritizing the safety of its clients.

“We are committed to ensuring that all clients enjoy their visit to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates on hiking activities to Margherita as developments unfold".

In the interim, UWA urges visitors to explore other picturesque peaks within the Rwenzori National Park.

These according to Hangi include Mount Speak, Mount Baker, and Cheptegei Peak on Stanley Range.

“These routes offer breath-taking views and unique experiences amidst the stunning landscape of the park,”said Hangi.
