The executive director National identification and registration authority (NIRA) RoseMary Kisembo has assured Ugandans that the National identification number (NIN) remains valid despite the expiry or renewal of National Identity card.

While appearing before the parliamentary committee on commissions, statutory authorities and state enterprises to answer queries of the auditor general regarding the delayed renewal process, Kisembo said that an individuals Nationality is tied to their personal National identification number not the IDS expiry date.

She  says that the renewal process of IDs is expected to commence in late July or early August.

On the issue of some Ugandans not receiving IDs, Kisembo said because the technology was outdated some individuals' thumbprints were not captured.

However, she assured the committee that NIRA has acquired a new system that utilizes iris technology for registration, ensuring more accurate data capture.

Irisris technology focuses on capturing the eye details of a person.

"In the new exercise we are  going to add the eris as another biometric feature ,in the event that you don't have finger prints, probably your eris will give us a good biometric"   Kisembo said.

Her explanation came after MPs raised concerns about the consequences of delayed ID renewal and the status of Ugandan nationality upon ID expiry.
