Ambassador Popp emphasizes continued partnership with Uganda

The US Ambassador to Uganda William Popp has reiterated his government’s commitment in supporting the liberty of all people as well as continued support for Uganda.

Speaking at celebrations to mark the US 248th Independence day celebrations in Kampala, the Ambassador says the commitment remains strong with nearly 3.7 trillion shillings injected in various sectors to benefit Ugandans annually.

The United States of America declared its independence on July 4th, 1776, marking a pivotal moment in world history.

“Today this commitment remains strong with nearly 1 billion USD or nearly 3.7 trillion Ugandan shillings a year that save lives, builds resilience in communities, fuels economic growth and strengthens democratic institutions across the 146 districts of Uganda”, he said

He added that “in the spirit of partnership nearly 70% of our activities implemented through local non-governmental organizations generating over 6000 jobs for Ugandans”.

Ambassador Popp also mentions that democracy is the best form of govt and that everyone across the globe should have the right to free expression.

“Commitment to rule of law, individual liberty, and dignity are crucial for any democracy” he emphasized.

The celebrations were attended by members of the diplomatic corps, officials from the central govt and civil society among others.

Celebrations were climaxed by a display of fireworks.
