Legislators on the human rights committee of parliament have tasked the minister of justice and constitutional affairs Maj. General Kahinda Otafiire to explain the continued trial of civilians in the Military court martial.

He was appearing before the committee chaired by Mitooma woman MP Jovah Kamateeka to brief the members on the extent of implementation of the recommendations of the Uganda Human Rights Commission Annual reports.

Kilak South MP Gilbert Olanya demanded the minister to explain why government has continued to charge civilians before military court martial despite recommendations by the commission that  they should be  tried in the civil or criminal courts.

But the minister defended the move saying that most of the civilians prosecuted in the military court commit offenses under the military criminal code.
