Police arrests three in Kitgum for arson

Three people have been arrested in connection to a fire that burnt a truck loaded with merchandise in Owino market, Kitgum Municipality.

Those arrested are Arum Karim, the driver of the truck, a co-driver only identified as Obedi and Olwoch Anthony the turn-man.

The Mitsubishi Fuso truck registration number UAM 378F had been parked in the market before the merchandise was offloaded. Some of the items that were reduced to ashes include sacks of charcoal, sim-sim, millet, second-hand clothes among others.

The fire that started at around 2:30am on Wednesday is believed to have originated from a lorry that had arrived from Akilok in Orom Sub-County, where traders had gone for the monthly market day.

Moses Oola, the District Police Commander, says they managed to put out the fire but after every item in the lorry had caught fire. He adds that the fire is believed to have started from inside the lorry.

'The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire could have started from inside the lorry especially among the sacks of charcoal. One of the sacks of charcoal must have had a live piece of charcoal which slowly combusted as the lorry moved, letting in lots of oxygen,' he says.

Daniel Okello, one of the traders counting losses says he heard noises and once he reached the scene all he could see was a cloud of smoke, which the police fire brigade was attempting to contain. He lost all his produce.

William Komakech, the Resident District Commissioner, believes there was infighting among the operators of the truck that resulted in the destruction of property of the vendors.

After the investigations are concluded the suspects will be charged with arson.
