Redevelopment of old taxi park kicks off on Monday

The Kampala Capital City Authority has finalized plans to redevelop Old Taxi Parks starting on Monday after agreeing with all taxi operators to construct this park in phases.

In a meeting organized by Kampala Operational Taxi and Stages Association KOTSA Chairman Hajji Yasin Ssematimba, the redevelopment of old Taxi Park will commence on Monday and number of stages will be affected Including Entebbe, Lubaga, and Kawempe Namugongo among others.

He says that they agreed with KCCA to have alternative parking for stages that would be affected in the first phase.

The renovated Taxi Park will increase the economic potential of more than 25,000 people who work in this area. This will benefit passengers, taxi drivers, conductors, food vendors and small business owners.” Yasin said.

Police Liason Officer Emmanuel Ssempijja warned taxi operators against politicizing the project but instead cooperate with the contract to make the redevelopment of the park is done in a stipulated deadline.

Kampala Capital City Authority received Shs3 billion grant from the government of Netherlands for redeveloping of Old Taxi Park.

The proposed redevelopment of the Old Taxi Park is linked to the just completed Urban Transport Master Plan where KCCA plans to provide residents of Kampala with fast and reliable public transport services by 2040.

Over 200,000 people commute daily through the Old Taxi Park to connect to different destinations within the greater Kampala metropolitan area and beyond.
