Kidnapped Kanungu business man released after 4.2m ransom payment

A Ugandan businessman who was allegedly kidnapped by unidentified gunmen from the Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC about two weeks ago has regained his freedom.
Yoanasani Kyariisima, a resident of Kabingo cell in Kanyantorogo Sub County was released by his kidnappers in the wee hours of Monday morning following the payment of a ransom of Shillings 4.2 million by his family to the kidnappers.
Dabtience Tumusiime, a brother to Kyariisima, says they sent the kidnappers Shillings 4.2 million on mobile money following protracted negotiations to secure the release of his brother.
The kidnappers had initially asked for Shillings 25 million and threatened to kill their victim should the family failed to do so following his kidnap on January 12, 2017 from his home in Kabingo Cell. Tumusiime says they continued engaging the kidnappers on phone until they struck a compromise.
He says Kyariisima returned home with several injuries on the bums and back resulting from the torture by his kidnappers. Joab Wabwiire, the Kanungu District Police Commander, says the businessman is admitted at Kihiihi Health Center IV in critical condition awaiting an operation.
