Teachers arrested for showing up in class drunk

Three teachers have been arrested for persistent absenteeism and being drunk on duty.

The trio; Patrick Oloya, Vincent Oyenga and Patrick Lumumba Ocaya were picked up from Pacwa Dag Wac Primary school, Mucwini Sub County, Kitgum district, in an operation led by Mucwini Sub County Chairperson Richard Komakech Pa-Ilibo on Thursday.

Komakech says he acted on a tip-off that the teachers had appeared at school drunk. Indeed, he adds, they were found heavily drunk and without any scheme of work.

The teachers were held at Kitgum Central Police Station where they were later cautioned and released.

Kitgum Chief Administrative Officer Joseph Lomongin describes the incident as unfortunate.  He however adds that alcoholism among teachers can be addressed by eliminating absenteeism and strengthening school management.

Kitgum district Chairperson Jackson Omona says his administration is preparing exceptional methods to transform the education sector in the district.
