After losing to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night in the Champions League, Chelsea fired manager Thomas Tuchel.

After 20 months, the 49-year-old former manager of Paris St. Germain and Borussia Dortmund departs from Stamford Bridge.

Till a replacement is found, owner Todd Boehly has appointed Tuchel’s coaching staff as interim management.

According to a club statement, the owners feel that hiring a new head coach is “the proper time.”

“As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the Club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition,” the statement read.

“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the club. Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.”

The news comes after Tuchel and his team had a fragmented performance in their shocking 1-0 Champions League loss to Dinamo Zagreb. This was their third loss in seven games across all competitions this season

Tuchel was appointed on 26 January, 2021, replacing Frank Lampard, and guided the club to their second Champions League title just four months later.

“We are clearly not there, where we need to be and where we can be,” he said. “So it’s on me, it’s on us, we need to find solutions.”

Tuchel added on BT Sport: “At the moment, everything is missing, [there is] too much to analyse. I’m a part of it.

“I am angry at myself, I am angry at our performance. I didn’t see it coming.

“We need to be much better. We are not finished, we are not happy but I thought we were on a good way. I am surprised by this performance.”

He went on to add the Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup later that year.
