UNICEF and other partners are planning to open a new settlement area in Yumbe District to accommodate more refugees fleeing to Uganda.

2,442 South Sudanese refugees arrived in the country on Monday this week. This follows an inter-agency assessment mission by UNICEF, Office of Prime Minister, UNHCR and other partners.

UNICEF Communication Specialist Catherine Ntabadde Makumbi says once set up the settlement could host up to 100,000 refugees.

73% of refugees who crossed into Uganda were children who have already been immunized against polio and measles.

Ntabadde says between 9-26th July 2016, 5,501 children  were immunized against Polio while 11,536 children received vaccines against measles.
