The Uganda school for the deaf administration has cited under staffing as a key challenge in executing their duties. Speaking during the launch of the theme “Her Voice matters” for the She Leads project, Tumuhairwe Juliet Mary, Head teacher of the Uganda school for the deaf in Ntinda said they don’t have enough trained teachers to manage the children.

"The recruitment of teachers takes a long time. So You find that teachers who are around are stressed to do everything instead of sharing the subjects. According to the government each teacher should be handling ten children but you find one teacher in a class of 30" said headteacher Tumuhairwe.

Another challenge is the lack of books written in both sign language and English, but the head teacher says the teachers are doing their work very well to help these children be able to sit the primary examination at the end of seven years.

“During the teaching and learning, we have some challenges of communication, but of course sign language as it is a short cut, we find a challenge to streamline the grammar more especially when it comes to English. So you find that you can’t sign it all like it is required" she noted.

Late reporting of children with hearing impairment is another problem that delays the work of the teachers

“The majority of our parents think about these children later after they have taken all other children to school. So you find they report to school later and that one delays the teacher to start. Because once we’ve moved, it makes this child who has been delayed lose some themes. And that makes them some time remain behind and delays the curriculum” said Tumuhairwe

The school is only educating children who are deaf but also has children with low vision.
