Sand miners have been given fresh restoration orders to always first remove and put aside the Natural top layer before Sand mining then restore the natural set up after sand extraction.

This is in a continuous efforts by NEMA to have companies with active mines restore the Natural set up after extraction of sand.

proposals in the new National Environment act has suggested that miners deposit a fee on a government account that would be refunded after proof that the minor has restored the Natural set up.

How ever the proposal was rejected by parliament.Sand mining destroys habitats, dirties rivers and erodes beaches, many of which are already losing ground to rising sea levels.

it also has negative effects because when miners dig out layers of sand, riverbanks become less stable in addition to the pollution and acidity that can kill fish and leave less water for people and crops.

NEMA'S Executive Director Barirega Akankwasa says how ever that sand mining is a good economic activity but should be done in consideration of Environmental interests.
