Russian President Vladimir Putin has been removed from his position as Honorary President and Ambassador of the International Judo Federation as a result of the “ongoing war conflict in Ukraine.”

The news was broken in a statement by the International Judo Federation President Marius Vizer, who said, “In light of the ongoing war conflict in Ukraine, the International Judo Federation announces the suspension of Vladimir Putin’s status as Honorary President and Ambassador of the International Judo Federation.”

Putin, who was given the title by the International Judo Federation in 2008, has been involved heavily in the sport.

He has co-authored a book titled Judo: History, Theory, Practice and recorded an educational video titled, Let’s Learn Judo with Vladimir Putin.

Removing Putin as honorary president is not the first move the federation has made to condemn the war in Ukraine, last week it also announced the cancellation of the 2022 Grand Slam in Kazan, Russia, which was planned to be held from 20th to 22nd May.
