Ssegirinya Acquitted of Charges Related to Inciting Violence

In Summary
  • Despite today's victory, Ssegirinya is still facing capital offence charges including murder and terrorism in relation to last year's Bijambiya killings.

Incarcerated Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya has been acquitted of charges relating to inciting violence in which prosecution had accused him of organising a number of youths to protest the alleged cheated victory of his party President Robert Kyagulanyi as president of Uganda

Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu ruled that prosecurion had failed to adduce sufficient evidence to sustain the said charges.

She the stated that she found no case to answer against MP Ssegirinya and ordered him to be set free unless he has still other charges pending against him.

During hearing of the said case, police had produced three police officers to testify against Ssegirinya, however, Court found no evidence to prove that Ssegirinya had turned violent as alleged.

She then ruled that the commotion was caused after the Uganda Police used force and came in to violently disperse the peaceful crowd of Ssegirinya at down town Kampala (Miniprice) in March last year.

However, despite today's victory, Ssegirinya is still facing capital offence charges including murder and terrorism in relation to last year's Bijambiya killings in greater Masaka.

Prosecution had alleged that Ssegirinya had accused the government of stealing their presidential victory in the concluded general elections.

He was also accused of demanding for the unconditional release of all political prisoners who were arrested in relation to the concluded general elections.
