Court Set To Hear MP's Ssegirinya,Ssewanyana Bail Appeal

The Court of Appeal has set  the 24th of June  2022 to hear an application filed by Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya and Makindye West MP Allan Sewanyana challenging the decision by the Masaka High Court  to deny them bail in two different occasions. 

The group that is currently on remand at Luzira Maximum prison since September 2021, after being charged with murder,attempted murder, terrorism and abettingTerrorism. 

The Masaka High Court has on two separate occasions denied them bail on grounds that they face capital offences and that they were likely to interfere with investigations, despite clocking the mandatory six months on remand without trial.

They were committed by the Masaka Chief Magistrate Court in March this year for trial, but the state keeps on amending the chargesheet to include fresh charges. 

The two are charged with offences in connection to the Bujambiya murders in Masaka and Lwengo districts that left over 10 people hacked to death.

They are jointly charged with four others including Mike Sserwada , Jude Muwonge, Bulo Wamala and John Mugerwa. 

The group is said to have planned the alleged murders at Happy boys, Kalenda and  Kayanja Estate House in Kampala.

They are also said to have participated in the murder of Slaiman Kakooza, Michael Kiza Nswa at Ssetela Village, Kimaya, Kabonera division.

In the summary charge sheet, its alleged that Ssenyonga single handedly carried out the murder of Joseph Bwanila after being hired by Ssegirinya and Sewanyana and later buried the victim upside down in a shallow grave with his legs hanging out. 

Posecution says that  on the night of 23/8/2021,unknown assailants attacked Masaka district and hacked several people  to death and that on the next day,  two people including Mugerwa Francis Kizza and Kakoza Sulaiman were found dead and their bodied were dumped on the road in Settaala village and another person identified as Ssebyoto Ronald was attacked in the same village,but survived with injuries on his head.

According to prosecution ,on the 4th day of August 2021,the MPs   killed a one Bwanika Joseph of Kisekka B Village, Kankamba Parish, Lwengo District and  that  on the 23rd of August at Ssenya Village,in the Masaka City,with malice aforethought killed Kiyimba Tadeo at Ssettaala Village. 

They are also said to have participated in the murder of Sulaiman Kakooza, Michael Kizza Nswa on August 23rd 2021,at Ssetaala Village, Kimanya,Kabonera division .

 They were remanded on the 8th of September 2021 after they were arrested at Masaka police station where they had gone for the second day to make police statements on the infamous 'bijambiya' killings in Masaka district. These have since been denied bail
